Suite Stay Snapshot: Siena

In the heart of Tuscany, Siena feels wonderfully preserved in time. Its terracotta rooftops, narrow medieval lanes and honey-coloured palaces gather around Piazza del Campo, one of Italy’s most beautiful public squares. Above the city, the striking black-and-white marble façade of Siena Cathedral reflects the artistry and ambition of a place that flourished during the Middle Ages.

Yet, Siena is far more than a collection of historic landmarks. Its 17 contrade, or neighbourhood districts, shape a strong sense of local identity, with centuries-old rivalries and traditions culminating in the famous Palio horse race held in Piazza del Campo.

Between its lively cafés, traditional trattorias and independent shops, the city offers an authentic taste of Tuscan life, with rolling vineyards, olive groves and hilltop villages just beyond its ancient walls.

Begin at Piazza del Campo, Siena’s distinctive shell-shaped main square, where locals gather beneath the elegant Torre del Mangia and the Gothic Palazzo Pubblico. Climb the tower for sweeping views across the terracotta rooftops, then make your way to Siena Cathedral, or the Duomo, to admire its intricate marble façade, sculpted details and remarkable interiors.

Beyond the main sights, Siena rewards a slower pace. Wander through the historic contrade, browse artisan shops and settle into a traditional trattoria for handmade pici pasta, local pecorino and a glass of Tuscan wine.

For a taste of Siena’s passionate community spirit, visit during the Palio horse races in July or August, when the city’s neighbourhood rivalries take centre stage. If time allows, venture into the surrounding countryside for vineyard visits and scenic drives through the rolling hills of the Chianti region.

Siena has a classic Tuscan climate, with hot, sunny summers, mild spring and autumn days, and cool winters. July and August are the warmest months, with average daytime highs around 30–31°C and evenings generally cooler, making early mornings and late afternoons particularly pleasant for exploring the historic centre.
